Behind the scenes with Pirate Magazine - part 1
Imagine glamorous Private babes all decked out in PVC, trussed up in chains, wearing stiletto heals, wielding whips, and you have Pirate magazine. Since its rebirth in the nineties as a Private’s official fetish magazine, Pirate has become one of the most collected magazines by fans of fetish.
Toni Anzizu is the Barcelona-based editor of this hugely popular magazine. He’s edited and designed over fifty issues of Pirate and he’s also in charge of commissioning Private’s fetish and extreme directors. I met with him yesterday to find out more about him, and to find out what’s in store for fans of this legendary magazine.
How did you get into fetish?
I’ve always been into fetish since I can first remember! I found my dad’s issues of Penthouse once, and I guess it went from there.

But that’s not really fetish …
What is fetish? Fetish is a fixation on something very specific. I have a friend who’s really into cross eyed girls! I actually get really turned on by clothed people, and letting my imagination go wild. I like stockings and high heels. I also really like bondage …
Harder stuff …
Nothing is harder than the shit you see on television, the wars and the violence. My whole feeling about fetish, bondage, even fisting and stuff like that, is that it has to be consensual. If two consenting adults are doing it, then it’s fine. The earliest issues of Pirate had pissing and more, but that’s not extreme. What’s happening in the middle east is extreme.

Good point. How long have you been working with Private and how did you start?
Well, I come from a graphic design background. I worked for Mango (the clothing company), designing catalogues and prints for T-shirts. I also did television graphics. But Private, believe it or not, was an accident! A friend of mine told me this company was looking for a graphic designer …
Did you know what Private did?
No not really - not to say I wasn’t into pornography. But I remember in the interview they went through the requisite questions, then they laid this magazine down on the table and said this is what we do, have a look. That was the first time I’d ever seen a double penetration!

Do you think it’s important to “be into” porno to do this work?
Yes, absolutely. You can tell when someone isn’t. I mean, it’s a job, but you do it well when you take an active interest in what is being produced.
What did you do when you first started?
I worked on all four magazines in the beginning. It wasn’t like it is now, where each magazine has an editor. It wasn’t until issue 47 that Pirate got its focus on fetish and my first issue as main editor was number 54.

Besides editing Pirate magazine, is there anything else you do at Private?
I also commission movies, which isn’t always very easy, because we ask for a lot! For example, on movie shoots we also require that the director takes still pics and edits the movie (at least for the fetish movies). That’s a lot of work that many directors aren’t up to. Also, I always try not to bore the customer. I never commission directors five time in row. I just commissioned Dave Naz for Bondage & Perversion in

Which photographers and directors stand out?
Trevor Watson. He blows me away because he’s got an incredible aesthetic sense, and at the same time he’s dirty. Dave Naz too. He likes natural girls and I’m pretty sure he has a fetish for big butts because his girls always have big butts! He’s been called the Larry Clark of porn, and a great thing is that he has no hang ups. Interracial, bondage you name it. Susi Medusa is great, and of course she has her anal fixation. 99% of her stuff is anal, that’s her trademark. Tanya Hyde … superb aesthetics and British girls …
