With roots in rock and a killer foot massage technique that no woman can resist, director Tom Herold is certainly a stand-out character in the industry, and with his new movie, Fucker Takes All, he once again shows his talent for combining comedy and hot sex. I met him in Ibiza where he was working with Moiré(*)Candy on an upcoming movie called Virgin Dreams.

In between DPs and cumshots, I spoke with this affable German director, and was immediately drawn to his relaxed and fun personality. I needed to find out what lies in the mind of the director of The Click and Island Fever, not to mention popular vignettes like Eight Balls and One Hole, Restroom Games, Hot Hairdresser and Club Underground. What is his modus operandi? How did he end up constantly surrounded by beautiful and insatiably horny women?

Here’s a snapshot of Mr Herold’s world.

So Tom, where are you from, and does that influence the way you do porno?

I come from Augsburg, a very nice historic city in Bavaria, in the south of Germany. I can’t say in which way this could have influenced my way of working. It came more from the influences in my private life. Augsburg was the perfect town, to grow up in a cosy environment.

What did you do before porno?

First I finished high school, then the basic army time. After that I tried a few semester to study at University, but I realized soon, that this isn’t the thing for me, to sit and study books. I wanted action!

I decided to work for a big club, to arrange and manage their live concerts. Beside I played in a rock ‘n’ roll band. None of this was related to porn, except the fact of having a groupie in the shower, which could give a funny idea for a scene! I came in contact with the porn business in a different way. But during my high school and army time I watched porn movies of course!

How did you get involved with Private?

In 2001 I was recommended from a former member of the Private production department to do two vignettes for Private, to show them what I was capable of. In Ibiza - my favourite location by the way - I filmed one of my favourite vignettes to this day called The Thin Ray of Sunshine (released in Private Reality From Behind is OK).

What do you like about shooting porno?

When I started as production manager I liked it mostly because of the fact that I could be so close to so many naked girls, like you can never do in normal life. To be involved in a world of my own secret fantasies and to be so close to it was the beginning thrill for me. Also the fact that I could travel around and see new places. I like adventures, and this was a kind of adventure world which opened a door and I decided to step in.

Porn shooting for me is also a way to find out hidden doors inside of me. Also you can play here a little bit, play like we are Hollywood people.

What do you mean?

I just makes it fun, although I know, we aren’t Hollywood.

Yes, but even so. After all the fun you seem to take it seriously.

I have a wish - that porn movies won’t just be entertainment in way like a toilet paper. One time used and then the next … no. I have the attitude, that especially in a time like today a porn movie can and should also support the sex lives of people, that have need for more help. If I can reach out there with my movies to somebody, that is not just simply horny, but takes also something positive out of this session, then I am satisfied.

But the best part is that it is still one of the most free ways, to make a movie. And finally, I am still a horny guy and I can’t get enough of beautiful women, doing nasty things!

You have some nice performances in your films. How do you motivate your actors and actresses?

I give each girl before my favourite special personal foot massage, and then she doesn’t need any lubrication after. And to the guys I show always the money, how it gets less or more, while they act! OK, fun aside …

Besides my long nose, which tells me sometimes the right away whether an actor is good or not, I try to figure out as best as the circumstances allows, and to bring the have the actors already in a role that they like to play. Then it’s much easier. If a scene is just sex, then I try to figure out the style which fits best to their character. If possible, I book people that like to shoot with each other, then it is easier. On the other hand I like shooting with people that don’t know each other, because then some real FRESH surprises can happen!

Finally I must motivate them with my own fire …

Does that fire have to do with your special foot massage?

I just make sure that what we are shooting will look fantastic afterward!

I guess if everybody had that “fire” we’d all be making pornos! Your last two movies (The Click and Fucker Takes All) have a very comedic feel which makes them fun to watch, even in between the “porno” parts. Why comedy?

I like to laugh and I am a very fun loving person. I still love to watch old comedy movies, where you can laugh so much your stomach hurts. I think, that sex fits best to anything that has to do with comedy and fun. Good sex and laughing have the same effect. You can forget your ego. Maybe I am also little bit inspired by the first porn movies I have seen.

Which were?

Josefine Mutzenbacher and some of the first German comedy porn movies, where Swedish girls visit Bavaria. There the funny comedy part was already enormous.

So let’s stimulate the stomach in the comedy and some deeper organs later on in the scenes. Double effect!

How did you choose the actresses for Fucker Takes All?

I try to find always somebody who could fit as closest to the character. The script to Fucker Takes All was basically written by me and a friend of mine, based on some character pieces of Julie Silver. And you see in the movie, that she fits 100% to this role. Because she loves to play comedy too. Also Sarah Twain, an excellent actress, which fits perfect in these roles played in the last two movies. Sometimes I see somebody, and then I get immediately a picture in my mind, what type she could play the best.
